Rodney Corbett: How Scientology Was

Rodney and Candice

As you will see from the below, Rodney Corbett has been around a long time. Most important about that statement is that he, along with most of the other 18 declared in October last year, was around before orgs were full time fund raising machines; before L. Ron Hubbard had departed from the scene; before Scientology was being repackaged and resold.

We are delighted to have him tell his story on Backincomm.

How Scientology Was

I came into Scn in 1972 when I joined the Jory mission and started the HAS Course. Bronwen Jory was the course supervisor and Neville was the c/s and auditor. Wow what a team of theta people they were. The mission hummed with students and pcs. One had to fight for a seat in the HAS course room. The TRs were tough and we did them all, straight off the street. No pussyfooting here!

The wins we had on the HAS Course were mindblowing. The huge problems of life we thought we were having paled into insignificance and life became a blast.

My life changed after the course and I started a whole new one. I started a building company with my new-found confidence, I could handle anything!

I started my auditing with Neville and got the gains out of that as well.

Neville and Browen were incredible Scientologists who really got excellent products. Theta, and helping people was their modus operandi.

The Jorys left for Denmark in about 1973 and I moved across to Durban Org where Millie Coopman was the ED. I enrolled on the HSDC and continued with my auditing. When I completed the course, Millie had a pc for me the next day and I experienced the excitement of auditing a pc for the first time. At that time Durban Org was booming. Every room had sessions going on including at apartments around the org. We were all gung ho with plenty of LRH tech being applied by everyone with the purpose of getting up the Bridge as fast as possible.

The sole purpose for staff and the public was to help each other to get up the bridge. We did this with excitement, because we realized that scientology had the only workable way to solving the problems of life.

The org was located in a pretty downstat area but we didn’t make that a problem; the senior purpose was to get everyone going free. That is where our attention was.

In 1975 I made all the money necessary to achieve OTVII.

Every Friday evening after course we would meet at the beachfront and relax for a while and have a good time. The next day we were back on purpose to clear the planet.

The camaraderie was fantastic.

The only regging was for the Bridge.

I went to LA in 1976 and did the whole Bridge to OTVII. (Clear number 5410.) It took me 4 ½  years from wog to OTVII. I met Captain Bill Robertson there who was the CO of the AO at that time. His advice to me was to keep the tech Free, and showed me the LRH reference at the beginning of red volume number one, as follows:-

I’ll not always be here on guard.

The stars twinkle in the Milky Way

And the wind sighs for songs

Across the empty fields of a planet

A galaxy away.

You won’t always be here,

But before you go,

Whisper this to your sons

And their sons-

“The work was free,

Keep it so.”

L. RON HUBBARD.

I then went to Flag at the end of 1976, did the OEC, and took over Durban Fdn org early in !977.

By 1978 the org was booming and I had a staff complement of 25. It was in about 1978 that I started to have setbacks.

I was comm-eved and removed from post. I completed my contract after that but vowed to never work on staff again. (I did spend a spell of 1 ½ years in the SO in 2001.)

I continued to move up the Bridge and started NOTS in 1979, becoming one of the first South Africans on the level.

To cut a long story short, I became more and more disillusioned with the Church until recently, when I was declared. I have had no communication from the church on this matter but heard it from other sources. They didn’t even have the courtesy to tell me what I had done wrong. This is how the Chairman of the Squirrels does things now. The modus operandi of the church and the SO is to make you wrong. There is absolutely no application of one of the basics of Scientology, and that is to always make a person right.

This was the best thing the church could have done for me. I am now out of confusion and my Bridge is beckoning me. I will be having services soon from some people I can trust to apply standard tech.

I am now back to being a Scientologist who has his attention on helping myself and others up the Bridge to Total Freedom.

Thank you Ron for giving us the opportunity to enable us to achieve this goal.

I am back.

Lots of ARC,

Rodney Corbett.

  1. That’s an amazing story there, but the 2nd last line did it, and indicates a whole lot to me…

“Lots of ARC”… That’s what it missing from the current C of S… ARC. There isn’t any to be gotten anywhere within the C of S anymore. That makes me sad because the C of S was such a theta place for me in the past. But no more 😦

  2. Well done Rodney ! And all the best for you future bridge. As I myself discovered there is the real bridge out there where one can truly achieve OT :)))

  3. Good stuff Rodney. So glad to see that you are free again and can follow your heart, keep your integrity in and florish and prosper. Its great out here, the freedom is contageous and the ARC amazing. Welcome!

  4. Hey Rodney, great story, you’re right it is time that the true purpose of Scientology is revived, those early days in Durban in College lane where good fun I remember the vibe, even though I was a lighty at the time.

  5. That’s exciting stuff Mr. Corbett.
I got into Scientology in 1978 and your story is very real to me.
I am so happy that you will start delivering and doing it the right way again. It will be so funny to see a new start up org beat the pants off of an “Ideal” one in a shiny building.

  6. Thank you for your story. I have experienced for myself the beingness of Scientologists. I mean real Scientologists. You are one of them. Good luck on your new found freedom.

  7. What a wonderful story, Rodney. Thanks for taking me down memory lane of days filled with the joie de vivre and light-heartedness of life in Scientology. It was a game, and we played it well. Welcome back!
    Love BP

  8. Well told Rodney
I remember when Durban Org used to be a meeting place!
The field although small was on purpose and we used to talk to each
other before and after events – friendships formed which have lasted for over 30 years!
FEW people now arrive early for an event in case asked to Donate!
FEW people now stay behind after an event – they now hurry home so they are
    not asked to Donate!
FEW people actually now turn up for Events because they know they are going to
be asked to Donate and Donate and Donate!
No need to ever go to an Event again!
On this blog all we are asked – is to DONATE our communication and we are
    all getting back into comm!
    Love it xxx

    • I always managed to evade the vultures at events. I stopped going because sitting and listening to Mielie Cob drone on for hours on end was just too painful and so boring! Too many adjectives in ridiculously long sentences – didn’t know what he was on about half the time.

      • Draco. I was at an event with a bunch of Hungarians trying to listen to cobbie do the Sherman-speak thing with convoluted syntax and staccato additives, we were all slowing drifting back to the coffee tables and having private conversations to get way a from the hypnotic drone. Amazing.

  9. Hey Rodney! Great to hear your story. There’s a lot here I didn’t know about your history – its very impressive. Please keep us updated with wins on your progress outside the Church of Squirrels.
    ARC, Roxy
P.S. Hope you got a copy of my email from Ueli 😉

  10. Great story Rodney, I remember those days well. We had fun going up the bridge and as you say the regging was for the bridge and not for Mest which is the case today. You were one of the 18 that got declared for absolutely nothing, I think it was your name! Anyway we do now have an exciting future ahead of us.

  11. Great story, Rodney.

How shocking that you haven’t been told why you’ve been declared or even that you were declared. One wonders what’s stated in your file, stuff you don’t even know you’ve done!
No matter. You’re free now and real Scientology is still available to you.

    • So true good choice. Foot-bullets by the stern and serious OSA types. Only to later realize, oh crapola, maybe we shot too many at once? Maybe we should actually set up some comm evs? Jeez there are a lot of guys still leaving! Oh no! And the echoing div 6 hallways? Was that me echoing or was a new person in here! And the gag 2 stuff, why are they not scrambling for it? But our little cob has got it covered, he told us these div 6 no-speaking-only-listening new audio-visual amazing things will do the job. Let’s just finish all these comm evs and you will see! A boom like no other!

The watching and idle staff member wistfully looks out the window and ponders his impending bright future.

      Sigh.

  12. Whether you jumped, or were pushed makes no difference, Rodney. You’re free of the cult now, and that’s all that matters. Welcome to independence!

I first walked into a Scientology org in 1973, and had a nearly identical experience as yours. The old HAS course was tough, but it helped me to achieve a level of beingness and confidence that I didn’t even know existed. That course changed my life and made me a Scientologist. I still benefit from it to this very day.

As to your SP declare, all I can say is that it’s an honor to be rejected by those who’ve destroyed what LRH created. They may not know it, but I declared them long before they declared me.

    • “They may not know it, but I declared them long before they declared me.”

      Right on, Ronnie.

      Rodney,

Loved the line about “Chairman of the Squirrels”.

One could ask how an uneducated moron, a failed auditor and one who has never done the OEC/FEBC according to his own admission under oath can rise to the top in an Organization based on ARC and KRC anyway?

But that’s like asking who killed the Kennedys in that song “Sympathy for the Devil”.

      Anyhoo….

I can say I’m glad to outta that Squirrel Pit and I can tell you are as well, Rodney.

My guess is that SA will be the first Cont. that tells Int Management (or what’s left of it) to go f_k itself.

And that you guys are going start a domino effect world wide.

So I raise my tin foil hat to all of you out there in South Africa 😉

I figured when der Fuhrer sent his Schutzstaffel Storm Troopers over there that it was the beginning of the end of the Corporate Hydra known as the “Church of Scientology”.

  13. Well done Rodo!
Thanks for sharing. This at least paints the picture of what it was like “back in the day”, and how the COS, Org’s, staff and SO should be! Especially for those, like myself, who only know the current modus operandi of the CO$, Org’s, staff and SO!

We wish you all the best wishes and postulates on you exciting journey ahead.

    Love ET

  14. Well! I am a old timer too, started in December 1972. I agree completely on how it was enthusiastic to be on line and getting servicing. Completely true I got myself big wins which changed my life for ever doing HAS course, minimalist theoretical instructions and lot of practical drills. Floating TA regularly on auditing level. My biggest wins were on HAS course (communication course) and OT III. Almost all public on line were on the auditing training, auditing HSDC (dianetic course) was mind-blowing. In Paris Org, in these days (1973) 20 NEW PERSONS were entering the premises. We were close of a real Ideal Org, buzzing in every corners, rented an old Hotel close to the org as we were so fast expanding. Audting in the attic or bath room or kitchen, no problem it was so funny. Change started 1978, and blasted in 1981, DM began to take the power. Now we are around 500 French scientologists not more, for 66 millions french people, far from taking the planet, isn’t ?
And from those some are like me under cover, how many ? I convinced my close friends old timer scientologist (former staff, class IX) (around ten) to get in dissidence from the CSC. Many reasons are explained over the different forums on why some rest inside the bubble, not all with pertinence. It is the not the subject in this missive. French are specialist on revolutions and on resistance spirit, our past history can attest.
However, a thing I can’t understand is the name of indies instead of dissident, as I can get that the name independent means freedoms but how indies can allies

However, a thing I can’t understand is the name of indies instead of dissident, as I can get that the name independent means freedoms but how indies can combine freedom with applications constant of standard tech without control of any organized bodies. Every organization on earth performing hight quality standard have a control quality system with strict, rigid pack of procedures supervising every aspects from conception to final product, even until destruction of the product itself.
This control system is organized over a network of independent bodies that have the ability to deliver certification to those fulfilling the obligations, this in order to get a product conform to standard procedures. There is a scale of notations with graduations of penalties. That is a reason why we have some excellent vines and cheeses in France with the AOC system. (Joke)
but more seriously , health system, aeronautic use drastically quality control. Airplane doesn’t clash as much as Pc in auditing sessions.
    In France there no more than 3 indies auditors, but there are delivering fancy processes to their Pcs, mixing RD of upper of lower level all together. Several school exist as Mayo, Ron org from Captain Roberson and others, the class XII Canadians may be is delivering the real tech but nobody can verify if this is true, the class XII Italians too (doesn’t want name them). So, it seems that the field of indies is quite anarchic;

Please, pardon my poor English language. I expect a lot of people wanting to hang me not only from the official church but from the indies too, are them not anarchic ?
If the french woman wrote a post recently, Florence can contact me, I will pleased.

    • Thanks for visiting from France! Anarchists, revolutionaries, indies, windies. It’s all cool. We all agree the little cob is nuking what we helped build for so many years. Cheese, wine, airplanes all need quality systems, agreed. This will be part of any future pattern amongst the indies in future.

Much of Western Canada is overrun with Ron’s Org squirrels primarily because of their connections with such practitioners in Idaho. Ontario features some of the most on-source highly trained terminals true to pure LRH tech anywhere on the planet. Toronto is the place to be in Canada to make it all the way standardly to the top.

    • Hi Candid,
      I agree with your analysis…
Sooner or later we (Indies or whatever you call it) will need some sort of certification. If you look out 100 years from now, how else can we know who is doing what??

      Thanks,
      Robert

    • Candide, bonjour !
I had no access to internet yesterday, and I discover that you want I get in touch with you… How ???

  15. Nice one Rodney.

Good to see you here. It’s adds another wave to this process and let’s those just looking in that this is a growing stream of people.

The little cob seems to be doing a fine job reducing the numbers of his customers. Keep it up little cob, we need you to slam in GAT II a bit harder so we can get some more out of there.

Rodney. Hope you get on with your next service soon. Thanks for writing this article. Much appreciated.

  16. I’m also was starting in 1972. had a similar experience. The stats were going up till 1980 really (from my observation). At this time I started to feel that the spirit of LRH was missing. If anyone remember there was 5 KSW serie 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 which were issued. I didn’t recognise LRH style or input. It was low tone, invalidative for people having reached higher state. It was written by David Mayo but signed LRH assisted by SNRCS int.
Mayo was not a bad guy but he wasnot LRH (not that one needs to be LRH to research tech as Bill Robertson did it very succesfully despite all the black PR thrown at him).
Miscavige increased the alter is and removed David Mayo.
And that was the end of actual Scientology. I remained 30 years on a group I didn’t belong. I paid the toll with my money and my health.
And there is only one SP declare I would like to read it is the one of David Miscavige. I would dream the wog law is not going to fire him but our own justice policies.

“David Miscavige, naming himself “COB RTC” is hereby declared a suppressive person.
He falsely represent himself as “Ecclesiastic Leader” a post which doesn’t exist on LRH policies…” etc… Unfortunatly I’m not native english tongue…

Your post, Rodney, is very inspiring. It’s a correct indication, it’s a hope that real scientology and total freedom still can occur.

    • (not that one needs to be LRH to research tech as Bill Robertson did it very succesfully despite all the black PR thrown at him).

Just pointing out that above line is suggesting anyone other than LRH is a bonafide source of Scientology Tech.

      • Most of the tech that has stood the test of time was developed by others and published under Ron’s signature. Many of us in the field who are actually auditing and delivering services went back to the early 1950’s Scientology when the tech was something you made your own and have expanded and extended the technology and have flourishing practices.

The unfortunate issuance of KSW in 1965 was the final blow in converting an applied philosophy into the mindless cult it is today.

Every successful field auditor is delivering services that are tailored to the pc in front of them. I have found in 38 years of auditing that there are no standard pcs and anyone who attempts to impose a cookie cutter regime on pcs will create another enemy for Scientology. Auditing must be for the pc and not for the benefit of an organization.

Those who still cling to the idea that independents are “squirrels” have not demonstrated an ability to develop a practice. The true measure of a technology is whether it produces results and do the people receiving services spread the word so that others get results too.

      • Dear Formost,

Just a brief clarification to prevent any possible misunderstanding. Bill Robertson, whom I knew personally, not once ever claimed to be a ‘source of any tech’. In all his presentations and seminars he every time publicly, clearly and very properly acknowledged LRH as the Source of the Tech. What Bill (‘CBR’) did was to apply it.

    • Hi FG,

I think your comment about the fact that one doesn’t have to be LRH to research the tech is interesting to debate. Even if it’s just for the sake of debating which I quite enjoy. Should a subject not be left open to be further developed by others I would hate to think what would have happened if the guy who invented the first wheel which maybe consisted of a roundish rock that one could push around said that this is it and nobody is allowed to change this ‘workable technology’. Maybe there wouldn’t have been horse carts or much later cars. Don’t get me wrong I think what LRH developed is fantastic and quite magical. But maybe it does perhaps need another take on something to take it to the next level. And from there on someone else to take it even further. Nothing can be static in this Universe.

  17. Welcome and excellent write up Rodo!
I can confirm that Neville and Browen Jory were incredible Scientologists. I was on staff at AOSHEU in Denmark in ’73-’75. They were first class technically and were very caring people. Today, in RCS, there is no room at the Inn for people like this… true understanding of the technology and caring for the person in front of you is strictly Verboten by Dear Leader…. Jack booted, untrained, robotic young people are running the show… a sad state of affairs inside the bubble. But, welcome to the light…. seems like you have been there for some time.. finished New OT V in 2005… out in 2009.

  18. Rodney,
Your write-up brings back to me the feelings of the early days when I was in Scientology. It was new, exciting, and I felt for the first time in many years that I was living life. I am now separated from the whole thing as a result of actions by the CoS that made it clear that the organization was not to be trusted. The information that is available to all via the Internet leads me to have a profound distrust of LRH. What he left us has the potential to change lives for the better or the worse. I suspect that I will not resolve this issue during my lifetime. Good for you for charting your own course. I am profoundly happy that I have left the clutches of the CoS and become able to chart my own. The price I pay is that I rely only on my own intuition and logic and experience, being unwilling ever again to put my trust in an “enlightened one” such as LRH claimed to be.

    • hohotai, don’t worry. Decompression can take a while. In the meantime, enjoy the freedom to do as you please. In the long run, you have gained experience, and that is also valuable. And life will get better.

    • Hohotai, I totally understand where you are coming from, I also will never listen to one man/enlightened one again. The best thing I take from this whole joke of a church is to believe in myself, a husband and son!

  19. Thank you so much, Rodney, for your story and your lovely picture. It is priceless to hear from true old-time Scientologists like you. So glad you are back! Lol

  20. Rodney, it’s so nice to hear about the old time in Scn.
I wasn’t “in” at that time, but as I haven’t come with the last shower, I totally understand what you are talking about. When joining, I knew it should sound like that: fun, camaraderie, wins, lightness…
I’m happy for you that you found another place to continue your game.
    Thanks for sharing!!!

  21. Dear All,
Thank you for your theta replies and acks to my message . I appreciate them very much.
We can all work together to re-establish those exciting times where Rons tech was being applied with great enthusiasm and lasting results. Let’s get everybody winning!
Anything can be handled with LRH’s tech such as; ARC, KRC, granting beingness, The Code of Honour etc, etc, etc.( Re-read PAB 40, you will love it.)
    Lots of ARC,
    Rodney Corbett.

  22. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and talking at length with Rodney recently. I salute him for his persistence over the years, for never giving up, and for his determination to discover where the real tech lies. It’s a reminder to everyone that postulates to find the actual way out really do work.
