How the system is eroding

reputationIt is a well known fact that the church operates a climate of fear. It is how they have exerted control over staff and the general community at large for so long.

There was a time when they were very good at it. The HCO/OSA machine were able to corral people and quickly cut off contact from any dissenting elements. However the advent of the Internet with its broad & instant communication has made this control less and less effective.

This, combined with the internal disestablishment of HCO & OSA, has to a large extent neutered their ability to tightly control dissent. OSA is a shadow of what it used to be. What happened last year with the 18 declares would not have happened 10 or more years ago. Back then the church would have been far more effective at reigning in the wandering sheep while only having to declare a small handful of people as “heads on pikes”.

For the most part any remaining control is reputation only. The church has a reputation of being really good at investigating and routing out disaffection. It is simply no longer true. On the external front this was stated quite boldly in this article at PageSix: No one is scared of Tom Cruise or Scientology anymore.

We are aware that there are a large number of people who read this blog who are under the radar who don’t want to rock the boat due to family or business reasons but who are, for all intents and purposes, “out”. Be aware that your concerns are largely based on the big bad reputation of the church. It is a reputation that is now less and less deserved. This is not to say that they are completely unable to be vicious because they certainly can be. However you will find that the boundary you believe exists has been pushed back a lot further.

So when you see something wrong, say something. Open up comm with your close connections that you think don’t want to hear what you have to say. It is very likely that you will find more people willing to engage in a conversation on the matter. Of course go lightly at first to test the water but you will probably be surprised. Remember that they believe they are the only people seeing the problems and it is a massive relief to find others who have made the same observations. Someone who was dedicated to Ideal Orgs a year ago may well now be questioning the extent of the excessive fundraising.

We are nearing the end of the time of internal fear of the corporate Scientology system. It is undermined every time another person speaks out. It is undermined every time a Scientologist points out to another Scientologist that something is wrong. At every turn there is less to fear.

The system will ultimately be undone by the slow erosion of the people and structures that have supported it. Every person that stops going to fundraisers or who doesn’t take a call from a reg erodes it just a little bit more. Already we see the impossibility of enforcing disconnection completely. Yes, families and friends have been disconnected but when you look at the greater network we see so many in good standing Scientologists still connected to those on the “dark side”.

The church is in slow retreat. We can all do something to help it along.

    • As Mick Jagger would slay, “the time is right for fighting in the streets!” I agree with your article that UTR people should come out wherever possible because the church cannot control everyone and is weaker now, so the threat too is weaker. Everyone who comes out publicly helps.

  1. Nice article, sums up the current scene rather succinctly! As the church bubble keeps shrinking then finally pops it will be intetesting what happens. Perhaps
further divisions before a propper reformation eventually occurs. But this has been discussed a plenty.
What is important is continued service delivery outside the bubble! Once people finish decompressing most will want services Id bet. The same problem will still crop up. Too many pc’s and too little auditors. Might be a good idea to link up with independant groups with a good track record ie. Milestone 1 and a few others. Old auditors would be sure needed, GAT training NOT a prerequisite!
The peoples Scientology expands ever outwards! Imagine the next post showing DM arrested for tax fraud and the church given back to those who care about it. Theres a shithot post Id love to see!

    • What is important is continued service delivery outside the bubble!

Yes, that! … there we go. 🙂

Too many pc’s and too little auditors.

Most standard tech auditors out here are running way below capacity, often doing quite well on 2 or 3 PCs a month when they could be servicing a dozen. Others have gone on to more profitable vocations but could have their arms twisted to go back into the chair should any major CO$ exodus occur. A situation might lie 30 years away from now … little current auditor training among the Indies or the CO$.

    • “There’s a shithot post I’d love to see!” Sheeplebane! :-)))))))
Cramming is knocking on the doors. “Think for yourself” is knocking on the doors. “Look, don’t Listen” is knocking on the door. “Defiance” is knocking. “Self-determinism” is knocking. “True for you is what you…” is knocking.

  2. Scnafrica: I think this is a wonderful post with great advice and I hope that many that are running under the radar right now will give this a try. The results could be amazing.

  3. Having worked with LRH and having been in personal communication with him, having indicated to him that our station ship was in grave danger due to the in competencies of the captain that he appointed prior to her running the ship aground thus endangering the lives of our crew, I never feared communicating to him or anyone else in the sea org about anything that I felt was not optimum.
There were great people in the sea org who I still communicate with but there were a few lunatics that I had the unpleasant experience to be associated with. These lunatics spread fear in order to maintain their position in space. David Miscavige is one of these lunatics without a doubt.
In 1970 LRH wrote an article in the Orders of the Day on the flag ship, he stated that “IT APPEARS THAT MEMBERS OF THE CREW HAVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE SOFTER SIDE OF SCIENTOLOGY SUCH AS AUDITING AND 2 WAY COMM. INSTEAD THEY ARE USING HARSH ETHICS CONDITIONS AS PUNISHMENTS”.
In this world of ours there are 2 ways of expanding. There is Horizontal Expansion and Vertical Expansion. Our world has expanded exponentially horizontally for many years now with the creation of better cell phones and high definition TVs and much more.Vertical expansion is a spiritual expansion. Our world has not expanded vertically one bit but has in fact contracted.
The Liberal Elitists have done everything they could to destroy anything spiritual in our world. While there is a tremendous amount of research going on by scientists in the spiritual field it is being denied and ridiculed by the materialists.
DM has caused Scientology to expand horizontally with the huge buildings and ideal org’s but how much vertical expansion has he created? Thousands of SP declares of perfectly decent people. DM is contributing to our world of materialism along with the elitists. Why is he so terrified about appearing in a court of law. In South Africa he would long ago have had to answer for the murders he committed but manages to get away with it in the USA.
Today we have the largest epidemic occurring in our world, dwarfing all other earlier epidemics combined. By 2015 2.3 billion people will have been affected, that’s around 1/3 the population of our world. Our medical profession is not even aware of it. This is a direct result of materialism and the expansion thereof.

  4. In the meantime………………..” YOU ARE AN IMMORTAL SOUL. THROUGH LIES AND TREACHERY, DECEIT AND PRETENCE, YOU CAN DESTROY YOURSELF. BY SEEKING THE TRUTH AND LIVING A LIFE OF HELPING OTHERS, BY BEING HONEST AND DECENT, YOU WILL BE STRONG AND ACHIEVE YOUR POWER AND IMMORTALITY” LRH ARTICLE ”THE MEANING OF SCIENTOLOGY”

  5. Mike you bloody old dill. What incredible memories your name conjures up.I didn’t know at the
time but those were great times for me. What a bunch of guys. All magnificent bold characters
who I still think about today. Reg and Vaughan Davis, Richard and Jackie Bizzell,Millie and George Coopman,Ben Roets,Robbie and Alice Mein, Sandy Kroeger,Ernie and Gaye Corbet,
Rodney Corbet are just the tip of the iceberg of people I’m grateful that I met and knew thro’
my years on staff and after. We always knew where you were in the Org by your laugh, loud,
infectious and full of mirth. What a great bunch of people to have known all at one short period of my life.
Go well my friend I hope you are still the same old loud Mike Moretti.

  6. I thought this might be a good time to repost this LRH reference:
    Attitude and Conduct of Scientology
    4th London ACC, 3 November 1955
    From Pages 1-4 (transcript)
    :
“The next thing we’ve learned [in the first 5 years of active organization] is that organizational problems are best resolved by Scientology and that there are exactly two methods by which personnel can be handled – two methods. And these are very sharp and very definitive, organizationally. They are handled in one of these two ways…
The two ways of handling those who are not getting something done is, one, process them and, two, disconnect them from the organization but not from Scientology. Got that?”
[LRH then clarifies that we assume these people are Scientologists.]
    #####
“But we do not, I repeat, do not, separate them from Scientology or Scientology organizations, nor at any moment fail to give them organizational support or cooperation in the starting of any new activity in which they wish to engage for the benefit of Scientology. You got that?
“In other words, the arduous lesson along this line is that no-communication lists, revocation/suspension of certificates, court action of any kind whatsoever within the realm of Scientology and so forth, is not only – not only difficult to do but does not work. That’s just the end of it. It just doesn’t work. It’s for the sea gulls. That might work in Gestetner Limited or Westinghouse, but it does not work in Scientology. Got that?”
…”When a person becomes part of Scientology in general or the organization in particular, they are part of our own time continuum. And enturbulences which affect them and separate them out of an orderly existence, kick back madly all the way across the whole set of dynamics and you have apparently practically offered to kill somebody. I think mere capital punishment is not a fitting description of comparable magnitude.
“See, you say, ” Well, that’s all right. Don’t come around to this group anymore. You go away. Now that you have been booted out, why, you’re off of communication and we’re not going to do anything for you and don’t associate with us anymore” and so forth. This creates one awful reaction. I’ll tell you why I know it creates one awful reaction. These people don’t spin necessarily, but their retaliatory gestures demonstrate that they have received a motivator of enormous magnitude. I can tell you how it seems to them by what they do.
“They practically devote the rest of their lives and all of their actions and attention and everything else to trying to get even with you or remedy the situation somehow or something. This is one of the more fabulous things, so that it must be something of magnitude.
“It evidently doesn’t compare to simply being ejected out of a country or ejected out of some kind of universe or out of a family or something of the sort, you know? It isn’t evidently of comparable magnitude. This is a very great oddity I wish to point out to you.
“In the first place, Scientology is a road out of and into universes.”
[…] “I merely wish you to look at the enormous actions undertaken by people who have been ejected from organizations and otherwise. They seldom go off and suck their thumb dismally. They seldom do this. They might go completely into apathy…, [but t]hey usually come in there fighting with violence; they’ve got to do something of magnitude.”
    * * *
“See, we don’t quite understand the magnitude of the injury and the magnitude is considerable.”
    * * *
“It’s because they are people of good intention. And by saying that these people are not fit to associate with us anymore, we have told a lie of magnitude. This is not true. It’s never true. You got it?”
    From Page 9
“Our inability to understand the actions of other Scientologists has a very fascinating barrier. The limitation on our understanding is simply this: we say they have bad intentions, and that is a lie. Got it?
“So the whole situation is liable to enturbulate around that postulated bad intention. That’s what enturbulates the situation. That makes a lie.
“The situation then becomes unsolvable. Because we’ve entered a changing factor called a lie into it.”
    From Page 11
“The most valuable asset we have, actually, is our ability to understand, to do the right thing, to be kind, to be decent.”
    From Page 13-14
“Well, I hate to unsettle a very stable datum, if it does unsettle it. But the only way anything ever does resolve is by letting your own kind heart reach through. That’s the only way it ever does solve.
“And it never solves by being tough.”
    * * *
“It is proving more and more and more, that it’s not a safe thing to do [ARC break a Scientologist]. Not a safe thing from the standpoint of a vested interest, or something like that, to attack Scientologists. They’re too agile, they communicate, they talk. Get the idea? I mean, they do upsetting things. They don’t go back and sit down apathetically and say that’s the end of that.
“They write letters. They do things. They think of ideas. They think of ways to get a communication line through.”
    From Page 17
“What do we really have of value in the organizations of Scientology? The only thing we have of value, actually, is Scientology, an understanding of life, increasing ability to communicate, a good concept and grip on reality and the ability to like guys. That’s all you got.
“When you knock out one of those or degrade one of those, you’ve got less than you had before. You’ve got less organization than you had before.
“When we drop the various points of the ARC Triangle in their fullest meaning, we drop also the assets of the organization. And I mean that literally. I mean we drop the mimeograph machine, just like that, you know. Bang!”
    * * *
“And there’s only one more thing that we could know that would make us all feel very, very relaxed about the whole thing. There isn’t a person anywhere in Scientology who has bad intentions for Scientologists or their fellow man. And that point all by itself is very well worth thinking about the next time some trouble arises in your vicinity, because that is the truth. And if you handle a situation with that in mind, you will solve the situation.”

  7. We in RTC have taken note of this post and KR’d it to OSA. Our KR will result in very serious Ethics handlings by the OSA Facebook police.
Each day OSA orders Scientologists in good standing with the Church to unfriend disaffecteds. Soon, Scientologists in good standing will only be in comm on Facebook with only other Scientologists in good standing. When the 109-152 public Scientologists from across the globe who are truly in good standing are finally free from entheta, there will be Theta.
Frankly, we in RTC prefer to have a small loyal group of about 150 public Scientologists globally as opposed to the 12,000,000 dilettantes the Church use to have. Factually, Ideal Orgs composed of 2-3 staff and 3-5 publics are far more intimate and Theta than large and noisy Orgs full of banky preclears demanding to be audited. Honestly! What a bother all those people and their cases were! COB is so much happier these days. Smaller really is more beautiful!

  8. In the days when I still cared (and regularly crapped my pants every time the phone went out of business hours – it was ALWAYS Flag) one particular method of communication frequented by them used to really freak me out. They sent me emails subtitled “You”.
That one word used to miss my withholds big time – by WHs I of course mean such heinous crimes as not taking their calls and not attending events, not arriving at Flag and not emptying out my bank account (yes, I’m that bad!). In other words the High Crime of Being a Problem.
That “You” seemed to me like an accusing finger pointing directly at me through the atmosphere’s ether. It seemed to contain all the long-distance intention and control they could muster. Of course, later I came to realise it was just some bone-weary DofP bashing these emails out by the hundred who couldn’t think up a more original sub-title to his email. But that one word used to symbolise how CoS and Flag in particular (thought they) owned me lock, stock and smoking barrel – so much so that I could wet my pants at one pathetic word.
Joy of joys, that’s all changed now – but that feeling of being owned doesn’t vanish overnight, hence I’m still UTR. I fully agree with the message of this post, but the reality is that individual scios will disconnect. Handling that scenario is where I am currently, but also finding a considerable softening of vitriol.

  9. LOLS! Interesting game you got going there Sean! The gustapo has your families bodies in pawn! Woe for you should you come out of the closet for real. Maybe it would be the biggest relief you have ever experienced, kinda life the relief can only get after a decades long constapation nightmare! Then aaaaah.. no more church or pesky “inherited” family to threaten disconnection etc.
Having lost my sister since I left was a huge blow at the time. The shit she helped create wont be forgotten easily im afraid. However one day, when the koolaid becomes too bitter even for the hail to mielie COB indoc she got at Flag to keep her cowed fails, she may see the light – lets hope! My point Sean is I enjoy your humour and turn of phrase but perhaps its time to throw off yer shackles and be done with this stealthy, undercover nonsense and flip em the bird (zap sign) and get on with it. Plenty have and nobody has lost their lives, taken out 5 more bonds, lost all friends and family and become lepper messiahs! Instead most have prospered, even the incessant keyboard critics seem to be doing better according to their reports! No brainer then. Hope to see your name up in lights soon mate!

  10. Fantastic article. And very true. The dissention runs deep – HCO and OSA have no clue just how deep.. There are a number of people still “in” the bubble that are not happy. I have had numerous comm cycles with public and staff who, for one reason or another, cannot quite make their move yet. But in time they will. The church is losing old timer stalwart supporters faster than they are producing new SCN’s. The snowball is rolling…….

  11. Sorry for the delayed response to a spot on article.
You hit the nail on the head regarding OSA’s efforts. They are below Non-E and have dropped to a level of complete ineffectiveness. They may have had a loud roar in the past, but there is no bite.
There is field delivery of standard Scientology occurring in every major continent, with no action taken whatsoever.
